文書プロファイルは、そのプロファイルに準拠した文書の許容文法を規定するスキーマを定義する。 この仕様書は、文書スキーマを定義するために XML 1.0 DTD を使うが、W3Cから出される将来の仕様書は、W3C XMLスキーマ言語が標準化されるにつれ、そちらを使うことになりそうである。
この仕様書は、第5節で定義されている3つの名前空間に対応する3つのDTDを定義する。 DTDは、異なるDTDによって共有されている多数のファイルに分解されている。 DTDコンポーネントにモジュールの構造を反映させるべく努力がなされている。 残念ながら、あらゆる場合で1対1の結び付けが可能であるとは限らない。 たとえば、基礎モジュールは2つのDTDコンポーネントに対応する。 1つのファイルがデータ型と内容モデルとを定義し、もう1つのファイルが要素や属性を定義するのである。
XMLリンク属性は、現行の XLink 仕様書草稿を用いた実験のためにその要素上に組み込まれている。 その他の要素については現時点では解決できない未解決問題があるが、今後の文書において処理されるであろう。
Voyager DTD のファイルのフルセットは、zip 圧縮されたアーカイブファイルで、この散文体の仕様書とともにダウンロードできる。
こちらにあるのは、HTML 4.0 strict 用 Voyager プロファイルのDTDである。 これには、コア機能に加えて、マルチメディア、フォーム、テーブルがある。 %extra.block; 実体や &extra.inline; 実体は、それぞれブロック要素やインライン要素のセットの中に新しい要素を追加するために使われている。 %media; 実体は、object や img, map といったメディア要素を追加するが、audio や video といった新しい要素を組み込むために拡張することができる。
XML DTDは、あまりSGMLほども柔軟ではなく、結果として HTML 4.0 との相違点が多数ある。 title 要素や base 要素は、文書ヘッダの中にあるその他の内容の前に置かれなければならない。 inclusion や exclusions がないので、ハイパーテキストリンク(<a> 要素)はネストできないといったような制約を表現することが面倒になっている。 これらの制約は注釈の中に注記される。
